An Open Reply from a translator to People in Iraq

Assalaam Aleikom. I am a Japanese national living in Tokyo. I am a translator (English/Japanese) and you can see my work (in Japanese) at http://teanotwar.blogtribe.org/ and http://raedinthejapaneselang.blogspot.com/ -- teanotwar blog is about Falluja, on which a friend of mine and I published a book earlier this year. You might have read reports from Ms Jo Wilding, Mr Rahul Majajan, and Mr Dahl Jamail in April. Our book is a collection of their reports, and this weblog is a daily translations and articles on Iraq. Raed in the japanese language blog is, as you may have noticed, a collective translation of Mr Raed Jarrar's blog.

Back in April, I think some of you in Iraq got tens of thousands e-mails from Japan, pleading the hostages' release. Thanks to you all and a lot of people around the world, they were released in safety. I've heard that the youngest of them, Mr Imai, has gone to England to study. The volunteer worker, Ms Takato, has recently been to Jordan to deliver footballs and medical aid to Iraq.

I often wonder. Why is there a huge gap between our government and us? Not only in Japan, but also in Britain, Australia, South Korea and many other countries, the gap seems to be huge. Sometimes I have a nightmare of the democracy's quitting the world.

Now, with Mr Kouda (Koda, in some media) taken hostage somewhere in Iraq, possibly by the same group that beheaded Mr Ken Bigley recently, I feel distressed.

I don't know him personally, of course, and I don't know exactly why he travelled to Baghdad. His devastated dad says on TV that he had set out for New Zealand in January this year, and then made his way to other parts of the world. He was in a hostel in Anman, a backpackers' favourite, before he rode onto a bus to the Iraqi capital.

According to the reports, he was a "tourist." Several people, including the hostel stuff/owner and a Japanese filmmaker who had been in Iraq, told him not to travel to Iraq because it was too dangerous for foreigners.

Every one should have known that Iraq has got really chaotic now. So I wonder why he went there in the first place.

One possibility is ... Every time I read news stories of deaths and injures from Iraq, I feel angry, devastated, helpless at the same time. I want to know why it is like this. Why this hasn't stopped.

The young hostage must have felt the same.

I don't think travelling to Iraq now is a wise thing to do. He should have acted much more carefully. But, all the same, I wish for his safe return to his beloved family.

He is young, only 24 years old. He has his experience of travels and studies. He can be a bridge in the future. He is just a curious, easy-going lad, with no connection to the government or our military forces.

I wish for his safe return more than anything. It has to be his parents and friends, not the group who is taking him as a hostage, who blame him for his "recklessness".

We will be doing everything we can to make our voices heard. Unfortunately, we will not have an election until the year 2007, but we will try our best.

The law for our military dispach will expire in November. The government will try to extend it, but we don't exactly know what it will be until the Bush-or-Kelly matter finishes -- you know what i mean.

Thank you very much.

Maa salaama
